1) Recognize asthma as a manageable condition that if poorly controlled can be serious, impact the student’s health, and ability to learn

  • Implement staff asthma education
  • Encourage/support students to control their asthma
  • Respond to concerns

2) Obtain a specific asthma/allergy plan from each parent

  • Establish a mechanism to identify asthma students
  • Use multiple methods to understand students’ asthma
  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents/students

3) Recognize symptoms and take appropriate action

  • Tailor actions to meet individual needs
  • Respond appropriately to an asthma episode
  • Respond even if asthma signs are unclear

4) Allow immediate access to asthma/allergy medication

  • Support easy access and use of reliever medication
  • Promote improved awareness of asthma medications and appropriate use

5) Control asthma triggers in the school environment and during activities

  • Understand asthma triggers and strive to reduce/avoid exposure
  • Modify activity or location to reduce/avoid triggers
  • Support preventive action prior to and during physical activity

6) Promote asthma awareness among students, families, and school staff

  • Provide current and qualified asthma information to all
  • Provide ready access to asthma resources and information

7) Collaborate with parents, health professionals, school staff and students to ensure school maintains a current asthma friendly policy

  • Liaise with health professionals as needed
  • Evaluate impact of policy
